VYPE Magazine editor Brad Heath recently discussed a few pressing topics with Coweta High School Athletic Director Dewayne Hunter. From the state of affairs with COVID to his favorite sports movie, we have all the answer right here.
VYPE: Where did you get your start coaching and where did you originally graduate from?
Hunter: Graduate of Woodward High School and University of Central Oklahoma. Taught, coached, and was an Athletic Director in Moore Public Schools for 26 years.
VYPE: This is a different time dealing with unusual circumstances, how do you feel the covid response by your coaches and staff has been and how ready is everyone to get back into a more normal routine?
Hunter: Completing last year’s sports season was such a proud moment as an AD. Our coaches, athletes, parents, and administration did such a great job in working responsibly together. We had a great sports season, and it was only possible through all parts of our school and community working together. Everyone is looking forward to a year with a more normal feel.
VYPE: What is the message to the athletes at Coweta under your guidance and leadership?
Hunter: Be a great teammate. Strive to be the best you can be on and off the court or field. Enjoy your time at Coweta because it goes by so fast!
VYPE: Do you have a coaching/teaching mentor? Someone you have looked up to or call on for advice? Maybe it’s someone who has influenced you in the past.
Hunter: The Athletic Directors I worked with in Moore were so important to me. We always learned from each other. Brian Fitzgerald, Chad Mashburn, John Burruss, Bart Richardson were all important people in helping me develop as an Athletic Director.
VYPE: Let’s have some fun and let the Coweta faithful get to know you a little better. Where is your favorite place for lunch or dinner if you’re eating out?
Hunter: Savastano’s in Bixby, best pizza in the world!
VYPE: Do you have any hobbies?
Hunter: Golf, hiking and motorcycle riding.
VYPE: Favorite sports team, college or pro?
Hunter: Braves, Steelers, Thunder and Sooners.
VYPE: Your favorite sports movie?
Hunter: Friday Night Lights and Major League.
VYPE: First concert you attended?
Hunter: Reba McIntyre.
VYPE: Have you ever traveled outside the United States? If so, where did you go?
Hunter: Not yet!
VYPE: Tell me what you have come to love most about Coweta, your athletes and where is the future of the program headed?
Hunter: The best thing about Coweta is the community itself. There are great people here who support our programs completely. The school district has great leadership that is always looking for ways to improve our schools to better serve our students and parents. Our athletes are hard workers with great attitudes that never give up. This attitude has led to great success last season and promises great things in the future. It’s always a great day to be a Coweta Tiger!
