Coweta High School’s Chaney Helton is no rookie to the sport of softball. The sophomore has played the sport for a decade and has spent time playing at the highest levels for her age group.
“I have been playing softball for 10 years, the last few of those years I’ve played travel ball at the national level. Growing up, I wasn’t the best outfielder or player on my team. Hard work and discipline have got me to where I am today. I play centerfield for my travel ball team (Iowa Premier 16U National) and for the Coweta Lady Tiger varsity team,” said Chaney.
Playing for the Lady Tigers is fun for Chaney thanks to the upperclassman and the energy the team brings to the field.
“What I love most about my team and teammates is how much energy we play with. Every time we step onto the field, we are fired up ready to win. No matter the situation, we are always there to pick each other up,” said Chaney.
As a student-athlete, Chaney said she enjoys being involved in more than just softball at school.
“At school, I participate in National Honor Society. I love giving back to the community that supports my team and I. Not only do I play softball, I also run track for the Coweta Track and Field team. I medaled in 20 events as a freshman, including the gold medal in the long jump at Regionals. I qualified for state in all four of my events that I compete in. Those events are the 4×100 relay, 4×200 relay, 200m dash, and long jump. I placed sixth in the 200m dash at state, and plan to stand on the very top of the podium before I graduate,” said Chaney.
After high school Chaney said she would like to pursue a career in nursing while continuing to play softball in college.
