Coweta High School sophomore Ava Johnson brings energy, versatility and a team-first mindset to the Lady Tigers varsity volleyball program.
Johnson plays both outside hitter and right-side hitter, positions that demand more than power at the net. She has learned the importance of making smart decisions in each rally.
“I play outside and right-side, and the most difficult part about it is being smart with the ball and knowing where to place it,” Johnson said.
While she continues to develop her overall game, Johnson sees attacking as a strength. She is also working to improve her vertical jump, which could make her an even more effective option offensively for Coweta.
“I feel like the best part of my game is definitely hitting, and I am working on getting my vertical so I can hit more,” Johnson said.
For Johnson, the Lady Tigers’ close-knit culture is one of the most meaningful parts of being a member of the program. The connections she has made with teammates have helped make volleyball about more than competition.
“What I love most about my team at Coweta is definitely how everybody is so united and caring,” Johnson said.
She is looking forward to another season alongside those teammates and hopes the group creates lasting moments together.
“What I am most excited about for this season is getting to play with my friends and make so many good memories,” Johnson said.
Johnson also competes in club volleyball with Tulsa Power Volleyball. She credits Avery Doenier with making an important impact on her development and remembers the bond they built as teammates.
“Avery Doenier left a big impact on my volleyball career. She helped me in so many ways, more than what coaches have given. We will forever be the freshman and senior duo,” Johnson said.
Away from the court, Johnson draws inspiration from her mother and hopes to attend Oklahoma State University after high school to study veterinary science.
