9 Qs with Coweta’s Layton Haught – Presented by RibCrib

VYPE: When and how did you first get into playing your sport?
Layton: I started in seventh grade. When I was in the sixth grade, the coach had come to my elementary school and just told us about it. I had done almost every other sport and thought “Why not?” and signed up that day.

VYPE: What is your favorite part about representing your high school as an athlete?
Layton: I love being able to represent my school because it allows me to be a part of something bigger. It helps to give me a sense of a larger purpose as I’m not just representing myself but all of my peers and teachers.

VYPE: What has been your favorite memory of playing?
Layton: My favorite memory from all of my years of running is of a 10-mile run down some random dirt road during summer training one year. It was an incredibly hot day and that was the farthest I had ever run up to that point. I really struggled on that run, but I pushed through and made it to the end even though I thought I thought I was gonna have to stop. It made me realize why I loved the sport and showed me what it’s all about.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?
Layton: A former teammate of mine named Troy Shrauger. He had a purely joyous presence that would just make you smile. He wasn’t the fastest on the team, but he always gave it his all and even more he was always encouraging others. He would go out of his way to make others smile and tell them what they needed to hear. He’s someone I very much aspire to be like.

VYPE: Why are you passionate about your sport?
Layton: It consistently shows me that I’m more capable than I think I am, and I think that’s a reminder everyone needs from time to time.

VYPE: Who is your favorite teacher from any grade and why?
Layton: My AP English teacher Mrs. Elliott. She is so sweet and caring, and you can tell that she’s really passionate about teaching. I’ve learned so much from her class, about English and life, and I appreciate her so much.

VYPE: What is your all-time favorite meal?
Layton: A big bowl of whole-grain Cheerios, some toast with peanut butter, and some fresh fruit.

VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.
Layton: I want to thank my parents for always supporting me in literally everything that I do. I want to thank my friend Sam Stratton for teaching me division in the 5th grade because I had moved schools and was behind in math. I want to thank the rest of my friends for always being there for me when I need them and for believing in me even when I don’t.

VYPE: Are you involved in any other activities?
Layton: I am a member of my school’s marching, concert, and jazz bands along with being a National Honor Society and JOM member.
