Head coach Gabe Ellis returns several wrestlers with a lot of momentum heading into the new season. These top returners and a few newcomers are poised for a big year on the mat.
Brock Heilmann (So.) is a multi-sport athlete for the Tigers and someone everyone should watch this season. Heilmann is a state qualifier and had an excellent showing at the Cheesehead in Wisconsin.
“My personal expectations for the upcoming season are to continue to work hard, improve my skill set, and make it back to the state tournament. I plan on wrestling at 190,” said Heilmann.
Another state qualifier to watch is Baylor Bart (Jr.). Bart continues to improve and show he has what it takes to make his way to the podium. It’s unclear what weight Bart will wrestle this season. He finished last season at 157-pounds ranked No. 7 in Class 5A.
State placer Tohmi Carney (So.) made a big splash last season at 126-pounds wrestling his way to a 4th place finish at state and becoming a Fargo qualifier. Now a sophomore, Carney is likely to move to 132-pounds if that spot is vacated by Toby Shipman (Jr.) who was outstanding last season at the weight. Shipman is a consistent winner and a two-time state champion. It’s no surprise when you see his name on the USA preseason and post season All-American list.
Another wrestler looking to add his name to the list of champions is Legend Ellis (So.). As a freshman, Ellis was 50-2 and finished the season as a runner-up at state. Ellis placed 1st at the Cheesehead in Wisconsin, is a Fargo All-American and a USA post season All-American.
Fargo qualifier Caleb Jones (Jr.) returns to the lineup and will likely wrestle at 120-pounds. Jones will look to take a big step to adding his name to the list of elite wrestlers Coweta will put on the mat this season. He is already considered one of the top guys in Class 5A at his weight class.
Aiden Jalajel (Fr.) is a junior high state champion and someone who comes into the wrestling room with high expectations. Jalajel embraces the challenge and will likely wrestle at 106 or 113-pounds. Also look for Sonny Hicks (Fr.) to help this team in his first year of varsity wrestling. Hicks is a multi-sport athlete and someone who can help the Tigers in duals.
