Coweta High School junior Lydia Surber understands the weight that comes with standing in the pitcher’s circle. For Surber, every game is a lesson in responsibility, composure and trust in herself and in her teammates.
“The most difficult thing is that the outcome of the game is mostly in your hands, and you get the win or loss no matter what happens,” Surber said.
Despite the pressure, Surber embraces her role as a pitcher and continues to develop both mentally and physically. She credits her work ethic and mindset to lessons learned through athletics.
“Athletics has taught me that everything is earned, not given, through hard work,” she said.
Surber, who will be a junior this fall, finds balance between the demands of softball and her academic interests.
History is her favorite subject, and she recalls her fourth-grade teacher as one of her biggest influences in the classroom.
“My fourth-grade teacher was my favorite because she made every day fun while also learning at the same time,” Surber said.
On the field, Surber draws inspiration from former softball standout Jennie Finch. It is not just Finch’s dominance as a pitcher that stands out, but also her character.
“She was a great pitcher,” Surber said. “She also is a super kind person, leader and hard worker.”
Surber’s connection to the game extends beyond individual performance. She values the relationships she has built with her teammates, describing them as one of the most rewarding parts of playing softball.
“I enjoy the girls and the friendships I have made through this team,” she said. “My teammates will always cheer me on and I can always count on them.”
Team chemistry shows up in lighter moments as well. Surber pointed to Graycee Graham as the team’s most vocal player, while Trinity Cloke “keeps everyone laughing” with her constant commentary. Meanwhile, the distinction of dirtiest uniform usually belongs to either Mya Gable or Graham.
Like many pitchers, Surber respects the unwritten rules of the game. One in particular stands out.
“When the pitcher is throwing a perfect game or no-hitter, you don’t say anything or think about it,” she said.
At the plate, Surber keeps her approach simple and focused.
“When I am at the plate, I try and hit good pitches,” she said.
Off the field, she enjoys spending time baking, especially chocolate chip cookies a hobby that offers a relaxing contrast to the intensity of competition.
As Surber prepares for her junior season, she continues to build on the lessons softball has taught her: accountability, perseverance and the importance of teamwork. With a strong support system behind her and a clear sense of purpose, she remains a steady presence for Coweta High School both on and off the field.
